Watch on Youtube

Background:

Mom was driving FW to school in the morning. FW had just performed in a contest the day before, and Mom wanted FW to watch the video recording of her performance. During the contest, FW performed the song, “Puppy Love”, an original song written by her (but which I had helped her complete), which recounted the conversations she had with me about a particular boy in class she really liked, and I had said that’s probably what’s called “Puppy Love”. (Incidentally, original lyrics included the line “…so I went and asked my dear old Dad” but they were changed to “…so I went and asked my dear old Mom”). Earlier performances can be seen on her Youtube channel.

(NOTE: Some of the audio, especially FW’s voice in some parts, is very low in volume. I had to use VLC Player to play back the videos using headphones at 200% volume in order to be able to hear a lot of it. For parts which I am unclear as to what is being said, I have put the words in [square brackets] or denote as [xxx].)

S . no Party Dialogue
1. Daug. OK I’ve finished watching it.
2. Resp. FW!
3. Daug. What? I watched it.
4. Resp. YOU WATCHED WHAT?!! I WANT TO HEAR YOU [SAY], [SAY] WHERE YOU CAN IMPROVE, OK!
5. Daug. I already watched it, Mom…
6. Resp. YOU WATCHED WHAT?!!
7. Daug. Me…
8. Resp. I didn’t hear anything playing… being played.
9. Daug. It did play!
10. Resp. FW!
11. Daug. See, I have the volume on full blast.
12. Resp. AM I DEAF??!
13. Daug. You know, you don’t want me to answer that question…
14. Resp. OK?... [You’ll be a world class celebrity if you know how you fear argumentative skills on the right place.] Unfortunately you don’t.
15. Daug. I do. [on you.]
16. Resp. [Unfortunately no one awards for that.]
17. Daug. [I don’t need an award. You have everything to xxxxxxx]
18. Resp. (Slows down the car)
19. Daug. What are you doing?
20. Resp. If you’re going to talk to me… I’m going to start disciplining you, OK?
21. Daug. It’s not as though I was [playing]… you told me to look at it.
22. Resp. I can’t hear anything you’re playing. LOOK AT IT!!!!! I want… I want you to… press play.
23.   (audio of FW introducing the song)
24. Resp. No… ‘enjoy it’? What’s that about? I told you already, ‘enjoy it’. ‘Enjoy it?’
(FW apparently turns down the audio)
What’s wrong, FW? WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?!
25. Daug. Wha-I’M LISTENING!!
26. Resp. What, so I cannot listen?
27.   (audio turned up, FW is singing the song)
28. Daug. Don’t show this to anybody. (pause, listening) [It’s already 52?]
29. Resp. I want you to tell me three places which you believe you can improve.
30. Daug. Well obviously not sit.
31. Resp. That’s irrelevant! A person can have very good etiquette while sitting.
32. Daug. I had no choice but to cross my legs, OK?
33. Resp. I’M TALKING ABOUT THE LAST PART! LOOK HOW YOU EXIT THE STAGE!
34. Daug. I have to stand up, bow first and then leave. Happy?
35. Resp. Huh? Not happy. Tell me overall where you think you can improve in terms of your demeanor, for throughout the whole performance.
36. Daug. What do you mean ‘my demeanor’?
37. Resp. Tell me! That’s right, tone, demeanor, performance, yah, tell me, where do you think you can improve? You don’t want people to tell you at least you can discover them for yourself, right?
38. Daug. [inaudible] you need to stand up…
39. Resp. That’s… I have told you, stand up – take that out of the factor.
40. Daug. Not let Mommy into the competition.
41. Resp. [I’m going back.]
42. Daug. Why?
43. Resp. Cos I asked you to tell frankly. If that’s the best you can say about your own performance then no.
44. Daug. I already told you.
45. Resp. What? Say it nicely.
46. Daug. I have to improve on my pitching…
47. Resp. What’s… FW I’m not talking about musicality. I’m talking about the entire performance, the attitude. The emotion, the passion….
48. Daug. Fine I have to add more passion.
49. Resp. Did you feel that yourself or just because I tell you to? It’s called ‘Puppy Love’, FW, for God’s sake. Yah? OK and what else?
50. Daug. (murmurning)
51. Resp. What else? What else?
52. Daug. Demeanor. Pitching. And I need to bow before I leave.
53. Resp. You need to get up, and look as if you’re very composed, yah? If you cannot hold the ukulele while you bow then put it on the chair and bow, understand? So people will feel that you’re very composed, understand? Even on the stage you got to be [xxx] to your actions, understand? Yah?
OK your bangs are totally messy, OK? Please brush them straight.
And besides that, what else? You didn’t have a smile on your face. OK, it’s like, Dude! You’re talking about love and you’re not even smiling. OK? You’re just… that’s what I’m saying, don’t [xxx], whatever. As a performer, whatever happens off stage you got to be able to have it separate while you’re on stage, understand? People don’t care any of your emotions, besides what your performance is going to give you at that moment, understand? Yah? That’s why they – remember that’s actually what they are looking for, OK? Is that, is the fact that, you know that, right, in a performance, anything else is like, anything can happen, right? So if an actress hears that her dog had suddenly died, then she can no longer perform? No! She can cry all she wants as she is offstage, but when she is onstage she has to give it all, understand? You got to give that… I didn’t feel there was much, I just feel like, oh shoot, you know, what the hell is she singing about love, you know?
54. Daug. You’re very encouraging, Mom, have you even said one [good thing] about my performance?
55. Resp. I think… the only thing I am proud about this performance is that you went up, OK, you had [a great group] too, and it’s a big, kinda magnitude of performance, there were lots of people, watching, yeah, but, in terms, you know yourself-
56. Daug. OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
57. Resp. [after you fail, right,] even your introduction was hasty, and no one understood it, because you speak too fast, that’s why I was, often I was just deliberately standing behind the judge, [xxx]
58. Daug. This. Is. Why. I. Do. Not. Want. You. To. Be. In. The. Next. Com.Pe.Ti.Tion.
59. Resp. This is not a criticism, FW. It’s between you and me. No one else in listening. Do you understand that? DON’T TAKE THIS AS A CRITICISM BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL TELL YOU.
60. Daug. Just leave me alone.
61. Resp. You often… Why did you go so fast… Your introduction was hasty, unemotional…
62. Daug. I WAS NERVOUS!
63. Resp. FW you were nervous many times but yesterday was the fastest you have ever gone.
64. Daug. No it wasn’t.
65. Resp. Yes it was! OK?
66. Daug. HOW DO YOU KNOW!
67. Resp. Cos I’ve been to, at least what I mean is, of all the…
68. Daug. No you haven’t! You haven’t even been to half of my performances!
69. Resp. Exactly. I’m talking about the half that I’ve been to.
70. Daug. Yeah!
71. Resp. And yesterday was the fastest.
72. Daug. Leave me alone.
73. Resp. OK? You gotta… FW, no matter what [xxx] told you, right, yah, just be emotional, carry your emotions…
74. Daug. I’M TRYING!!!!!
75. Resp. Ok? I mean, but you…
76. Daug. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!
77. Resp. … have the capacity, that’s what I’m saying. Yah? But yesterday you were like, it was more, it was like, before you were rocket speed, yesterday was even faster than a rocket. To the point I was like, whoa, dude, did anyone even understand…
78. Daug. SO????!!!!!!
79. Resp. So I’m saying in the future…
80. Daug. LEAVE ME ALONE I TOLD YOU ALREADY, I’M TRYING!!! WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY?!!!!
81. Resp. In the future, just say I will not…
82. Daug. GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
83. Resp. I remember and yesterday please just remember you always have to make sure that when you…
84. Daug. STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!! (starts crying)
85. Resp. FW no one is being critical, we just want you to be a better performer next time.
86. Daug. Stop! I don’t need you to do anything for me….
87. Resp. FW I’m telling you so you can be a better performer. OK?
88. Daug. Leave me alone.
89. Resp. Cos we still have 复赛 (second round competition) this week.
90. Daug. THIS WEEK??!!!!!! WHAT IS THAT ONE ABOUT?!!!
91. Resp. 复赛,它的复赛比上一个更快 ([This second round is faster than the last time]), understand?
92. Daug. When is the 复赛?
93. Resp. Exactly the same, except this time you better have a better perfor- I want you to imagine that this is 希望之星 (Star of Outlook Competition), so are you saying you won’t be nervous for 希望之星 anymore? If this is希望之星 would you- you wouldn’t even pass, OK, with a contestant like Shelley, when you have such a hasty and ill-delivered… I’m just saying, you have to…
94. Daug. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
95. Resp. You have to continue to…
96. Daug. GOOOOOO AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!!!
97. Resp. FW! YOU’RE PAYING…
98. Daug. OH MY GOD!!!!!! YOU……
99. Resp. YOU’RE PAYING THE ATTENTION WHICH I…
100. Daug. It’s just that I’m always better than you and you’re jealous, that’s why you always choose this type of thing to pick at me.
101. Resp. FW, I’m just saying… I’m, I’M HELPING YOU TO BE BETTER!! I-I-I’M NOT PERVERTED AS YOU, I DON’T COMPETE MYSELF AGAINST YOU, WE’RE PEOPLE OF A DIFFERENT AGE!
102. Daug. Well then stop it!
103. Resp. I NEED TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
104. Daug. YOU ALREADY TOLD ME LIKE FOR THE TENTH TIME!
105. Resp. OK THEN DELIVER IT NEXT TIME, THOROUGHLY, AND NICELY! AND DON’T CUT IT SHORT!
106. Daug. YOU ALREADY TOLD ME THAT!!!
107. Resp. Then why did you cut your introduction short?
108. Daug. BECAUSE! I didn’t want to say it. Nobody else said anything.
109. Resp. FW YOU KNOW, FOR THE JUDGES, THERE WERE THREE ENGLISH SPEAKERS! OK! PLEASE DON’T… DON’T DO THAT TO YOURSELF ANYMORE!!!!! OK?!!!
110. Daug. [XXXX] LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
111. Resp. DON’T DO THAT YOURSELF ANYMORE, UNDERSTAND? I’M JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU!!!! As a professional, which I believe I am, OK, as someone who is capable of advising you, I’m telling you, YOU KNOW WHAT, I’M THE ONLY CRITICISM YOU’RE GOING TO GET,
112. Daug. YOU ALREADY GAVE ME YOUR CRITICISM TEN TIMES!!!!!
113. Resp. WITHOUT SUFFERING FOR IT, YOU UNDERSTAND?!! BY THE TIME THAT PEOPLE GIVE IT TO YOU IT WILL BE TOO LATE!!!! BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT GET IN!!!!!!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!
114. Daug. Well you gave it to me, good job, and you even lied to me…
115. Resp. Because, if I, if I were to… I wasn’t there looking at all the contestants. Sherry Too Mom said that, tell me that you don’t have to worry, because all the other contestants SUCK! NOT THAT YOUR PERFORMANCE WAS BRILLIANT! OK? BUT you cannot always count on contestants to suck, understand?
116. Daug. SHUT UP! I DON’T NEED YOU IN MY LIFE!
117. Resp. Don’t be so rude.
118. Daug. You’re the one who’s rude. You’re just…
119. Resp. Where’s your umbrella?
120. Daug. You’re the least encouraging person I ever met.
121. Resp. There’s a lunch box there.
122. Daug. This is my lunch box….
123.   (FW exits car and walks to class.)
