Background to the video recording

On 12th June 2016, the Respondent had been trying to persuade me to make Felicity spend more time memorizing vocabulary every day. The Respondent was trying to get me to agree that what’s most important for Felicity was that she eventually gets into one of the best boarding schools in the US in order to maximize her chances of getting into Harvard. I had disagreed, and said that what’s ultimately most important was her happiness at the end of the day, so there are many different routes to get there. The Respondent got very upset that I had said that and didn’t even want any discussion on that or hear what I had to say about it. She kept saying, “why do you have to say that?!!” and started becoming violent and pushing my things off my desk.

Comment:

Note that after I started video recording her behaviour, when she noticed it (you can see her looking at the camera), she suddenly pretended I had hit her. I question her about it and you can see what she said is inconsistent with what was caught on video (she didn’t realize that her violent desk clearing had been caught on camera). In the third video, she claims that she never thrashed my room and that I did it myself.

Note: There are 1 more video and (after my phone ran out of battery) 2 more audio recordings that were taken after these three videos where she continues to go on outside my door about how I should not have brought up “happiness”, as I clear up the mess she made in my room. Happy to provide those if requested.

Transcript of Video, with screen captures:

(Respondent is screaming and crying in my room. I am holding the camera and standing behind my desk, trying to capture on video the state of my room.)

Respondent: WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO DISTORT MY WORDS?! WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM? WHY DO YOU TREAT ME LIKE THIS?!


(I pan the camera to that my room is a mess, with my things all over the floor)

I DID NOT SAY THAT!!! I DID NOT SAY THAT!!!

(Respondent gets up from my bed, walks to my desk, and wipes out more stuff from my desk onto the floor.)



I DID NOT SAY THAT, OK?!!

(Respondent looks up and notices that I am video recording her with my phone)

DON’T BEAT ME! DON’T BEAT ME! WHY DID YOU HIT ME JUST NOW?!

Petitioner:  Please stop.

Respondent:  WHY DID YOU HIT ME?!

Petitioner:  Oh, I hit you? Really? Oh right oh right, ok…

Respondent:  WHY DID YOU HIT ME? YES YOU DID! WHY DID YOU HIT ME JUST NOW….

Petitioner:  So I hit you? Right…

Respondent:  (Wailing) Why are you only recording now after you hit me? (Wailing) Why did you hit me just now?

Petitioner:  Right… oh where did I hit you? Where exactly did I hit you?

Respondent:  You hit my arms… (continues to cry)

Petitioner:  Really? Show… let me…

Respondent:  And my face…

Petitioner:  Oh I hit your face? Show me, where?

Respondent:  Here…

Petitioner:  Exactly where? Where did I hit you?

Respondent:  Right here… (motions to her face)



Petitioner:  Where… OK show me where the mark is…

Respondent:  (Continues crying)

Petitioner:  Show me the mark.

Respondent:  It hurts…

Petitioner:  Show me the mark.

Respondent:  It hurts… (inaudible)

Petitioner:  Did I hit you on your hands or your face?

Respondent:  On my face and my arms… Why do you always hit me?

Petitioner:  I’m going to ask you to stop and leave my room please.

Respondent:  Why did you hit me now? You hit me and ask me to leave…

Petitioner:  OK I’m going to leave the room now. I’m going to leave the room now, OK?

Respondent:  Every time I talk to you…

Petitioner:  I’m going to leave now…

Respondent:  Why do you have to…

Petitioner:  I’m going to have my shower.

Respondent:  Every time when I talk to you, you keep on talking about “happiness”! I’m not talking about that right now!

(I leave the room to another bedroom, and the Respondent also leaves after that, back to the Master bedroom.)

(The next video was taken a few minutes later, after I had gone back to my room and had locked the door, and started cleaning up the mess. The Respondent is continuing the argument by shouting outside.)



Respondent:  I’m only talking about success, only purely, in this regard, concrete regard.
OK? Just because you have a very distorted version of how you see me, it doesn’t mean that you mix me in it. OK?
(I go back to clearing up the mess in my room)



Respondent:  Right? Why do you always do that? I’m not even talking about happiness. We can have a separate conversation about happiness, ok? This is not it, and you know it. OK? Why are being so unfair to me? I’m not your enemy, OK? Stop making me feel like I’m not... If anything I’m trying to help you guys here. Understand all the factors, OK? What does happiness have to do with that? It’s entirely separate! If she doesn’t go to school she’ll be happy, OK?

(She leaves and goes back to her room)

(The next video starts a few minutes after the last one, when she returns to shout outside my locked door again.)

Respondent:  You’re always using “happiness” to counter me, huh? Right, you’re despicable!
Alright? I’m talking about something that’s entirely separate from happiness,
OK? YOU’RE DESPICABLE! YOU’RE LIKE A DOG! WORSE
THAN A DOG! OK?!
(Respondent tries to open my door, but it’s locked, so she continuously tries to force it open, and bangs on it)



Petitioner:  I’m recording this! (Respondent continues). I’m recording this, stop this!

Respondent:  I want you to apologize to me, OK! What the hell! I’m talking about something… I’m not talking about happiness here! OK? Apologize to me!
Why do you have to mix that in!

Petitioner:  We are talking about Felicity’s life.

Respondent:  That’s not it, I’m talking about education, damn it!

Petitioner:  Yes. Education is a part of her life. A very important part of her life.

Respondent:  No, I’m talking about something else, alright? STOP MIXING THE TWO!
YOU’RE DESPICABLE! I’m talking about her education, OK?
Petitioner:  So am I.

Respondent:  THAT’S NOT ABOUT HAPPINESS! Happiness is happiness! OK? So stop mixing the two!

Petitioner:  So my deciding to talk about happiness when talking about education causes you to react like this?

Respondent:  Because.. No! Because you accuse me that it’s the be all and end all! OK?
And you constantly start saying that happiness means nothing to me!

Petitioner:  Causing you to thrash my room?

Respondent:  I never thrashed your room!

Petitioner:  It’s on video…

Respondent:  It’s not. You did it yourself! You hit me and you took me on video, accusing me of what I did to you. No! I will not let this happen!

Petitioner:  So you didn’t thrash my room at all?

Respondent:  No I did not!

Petitioner:  You know a part of it was caught on camera also?

Respondent:  No, I know, but I never did that.

Petitioner:  You mean you did the second part of it and I did the first part?

Respondent:  No, but I never… you can say whatever you want, but I will always maintain I didn’t do it.

Petitioner:  So you mean you didn’t do the first part?

Respondent:  …(inaudible).. treachery… OK?

Petitioner:  The second part that was caught on camera, obviously you did it, so you mean I did the first part and you did the second part?

Respondent:  No problem, that’s fine, you can say whatever you want, but I will always maintain…

Petitioner:  At least be consistent with the video!

Respondent:  OK sure!

Petitioner:  So I did the first part and you did… So I did the first part, and I hit you, and then you did the second part?

Respondent:  Yes, yes, that’s what I will always maintain.

Petitioner:  Alright, got it.

Respondent:  You want to play games with me, that’s what I’ll do.

Petitioner:  OK. Got it.

Respondent:  I’m talking about education here, OK?

Petitioner:  So am I.

Respondent:  EDUCATION, NOT happiness! They are SEPARATE THINGS! OK? Alright? And you will always maintain that I don’t care about happiness. Alright? I care about happiness but we’re talking about education. So stop mixing the two! And stop accusing me that it’s the be all and end all! I’m talking about success in terms of academics. Please get it clarified! OK? Alright? Don’t ever accuse me of anything! DON’T EVER!

Petitioner:  No one is accusing you of anything.

Respondent:  DON’T EVERY ACCUSE ME OF ANYTHING, YOU UNDERSTAND?! I DESPISE YOU! I WISH I WAS DEAD BEFORE I EVER MET YOU!

(Respondent returns to her room and slams the door shut)
